GUBBIO
HISTORICAL OUTLINE OF GUBBIO
The roots of the town date back to ancient times and every historic period since then has left its indelible mark. The Bronze “Eugubean tablets” date back to the 3rd century B.C. and are considered to be the most complete document of ancient times. The Roman Theatre (1st century B.C.) is one of the largest theatres in the country, only a little smaller than the theatre of Marcello and Pompeo in Rome. The daring massive structure of the Palazzo dei Consoli with the Piazza Pensile (14th century) has gained acclaim world-wide due to its wonderful use of space. The Palazzo Ducale (15th century) of Federicoda Montefeltro is one of the most charming palaces of the Renaissance. The cathedral, churches, and palaces, the medieval streets, many castles, abbeys and hermitages scattered all over the area are further evidence of its glorious history. This is a town rich in ancient memories and famous traditions, where you can almost breathe in the history in its welcoming and beautiful atmosphere. In the hearts and minds of the towns inhabitants many stories such as the encounter of S. Francesco with the wolf are kept alive to this day.
The free and proud town of Gubbio, fighting for survival against eleven enemy cities, under the spiritual guidance of its Bishop Ubaldo Baldassini, relives with great ardour, passion and mysticism in its most beloved festivity, the superb and unmatched ‘Festa dei Ceri’, that for more than eight centuries, every 15th of May has stirred every eugubino’s heart, no matter where he be, and bewitches strangers who attend it, carried away by such an overwhelming spectacle.
